What we think

Lettuce seedlings grazed off to their ankles convert no-kill vegetarian Cleve West to drastic actions, though he delegates the messy bit to a neighbour’s chickens, which feast on his slug and snail harvest. Theft and vandalism are as perennial a problem on allotments as pests

But Cleve’s joyous tale of a year on his plot makes it clear the hard graft is worth it. This year’s Chelsea Best in Show winner, he was a newbie garden designer when he took on the brambles and bindweed, now replaced with raised beds, espaliered fruit trees, pizza oven and four (yes, four) wilfully picturesque sheds. The photography is gorgeous, close-ups of plants and critters mixed with better-than-average snaps showing human life down on the allotments.

There’s lots of advice – of course – as well as not-too-preachy musings on sustainability. An Entertaining read even if you have no intention of following in his be-wellied footsteps.
